This is the first part of a three-part prediction blog for the main categories of the 33rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (which air on the 28th of this month on ABC, preceded by a pre-show on the cable channel SoapNet). Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series:

Commentary: This race was pretty much sealed almost a year to the day before the nominations were announced. We thought that Newman could pull off the big upset, but his choice of tapes proved otherwise, as Geary submitted two tearjerking episodes. But, we never know with this Academy.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Kelly Monaco as Samantha McCall (ABC)

Commentary: Flannery has become a Daytime Emmy institution in the early stages of the 21st century, having been nominated six times this decade alone. Monaco's success on Dancing With the Stars helped catapult her to her second nomination. Eakes is the new comic relief in Pine Valley, and Ehlers made history with her nomination this year, by being the first female soap actor to be nominated in all three levels of competition. But I think this year, the Emmy will go to one who hasnt won in a long time...a very long time. The last time that Kim Zimmer won, Guiding Light had much, much better ratings than it did now, George Bush was still president, The Simpsons just ended their first season, and The Young and the Restless was still the # 1 soap (no one can knock it off its perch).

Commentary: One guy fell off the wagon, another guy raped his doppelgangers wife, who dumped the doppleganger for a mob boss, yet another fell into a loveless marriage with his gal pal, a fourth guy dealt with his abusive estranged father, and the fifth, the fifth- well, its too complicated. Its going to be a close race between Rikaart and Dawson, trust me.

Commentary: We can safely say that the two surprises wont be accepting the golden girl on Emmy night after what they submitted. Chappell submitted two bravo and dramatic performances on her reel, but I think that shell cancel herself out with Tognoni, who also submitted two of her best. I think that Ferrin will walk on through the mist as she played a young woman who lost her baby and became a drug addict (all while not knowing that her baby was alive this whole time).

AS THE WORLD TURNS: Jesse Lee Soffer as Will Munson (CBS)
GENERAL HOSPITAL: Scott Clifton as Dillon Quartermaine (ABC)- SHOULD WIN
GUIDING LIGHT: Tom Pelphrey as Jonathan Randall (CBS)- WILL WIN
THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Michael Graziadei as Daniel Romalotti (CBS)
THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Bryton McClure as Devon Hamilton (CBS)
Commentary: Clifton is a class act as an actor, in fact all five of these actors are. When the nominations were announced, this was the most accurate category I predicted, so I was not surprised at this category at all. However, when it came to the tape submissions, they all told a different story. Ones was too short, anothers was eclipsed by two longtime vets on said persons show, anothers was eclipsed by a fellow nominee from another category, anothers was subtle, and the others tape was full of emotion and rage. In the real world, who would win? Who gave it their all? Pelphrey, I think gave it his all, but I (like a lot of people) would be concerned if his constant yelling and tantrums will cost him again. Who knows?

Best Younger Actress in a Drama Series:
ALL MY CHILDREN: Leven Rambin as Lily Montgomery (ABC)
AS THE WORLD TURNS: Jennifer Landon as Gwen Norbeck (CBS)- WILL WIN
GUIDING LIGHT: Mandy Bruno as Marina Cooper (CBS)
THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Camryn Grimes as Cassie Newman (CBS)- SHOULD WIN
THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Christel Khalil as Lily Winters (CBS)
Commentary: Bruno is a cute and charming Marina, Khalil brought some life into Lily, and Rambin played the most challenging part of the five- that of an autistic girl (who doesnt like being touched or the color red). But I think that its between the other two in this category- Grimes, who played a girl who died in a tragic accident, and Landon, who blew all of us away with her storyline of being a teen mother who learns that the child she raised is not hers and her real child died the night it was born (see Supporting Actress- if youre confused). But I can say this, dont be surprised if Grimes wins for her part in Daytimes most controversial storyline of last year.

Commentary: Y&R won the Writer's Guild back in February for the most tragic storyline on daytime television- that of the death of a child and the aftermath. The reason why Y&R has been the # 1 soap for at least half of it's 33 years is because we can relate to who these characters are, and I think the voters will realize that this year in the writing.

Commentary: Like the year before, GH hit the ballpark with their submission tapes in this category. I can't imagine any other show beating GH in this category, can you? I thought so, because what I learned in math class was this:

Commentary: Heads or tails? Who ever wins the coin toss will win the Emmy. Plain and Simple

Commentary: If I saw this category, I would have been a child again. In the decade plus of that category, there has only been one winner, and that one winner has kept us entertained for almost 37 years now. Unless they pull an Oprah and withdraw theirselves, I don't see that ever changing.

Best Service Show Host:
Emeril Lagasse (Essence of Emeril, Food Network)
Suze Orman (Suze Orman: For the Young, Fabulous, and Broke, PBS)
Rachael Ray (30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray, Food Network)-- WILL/SHOULD WIN
Martha Stewart (Martha, SYN)
Commentary: (Edited after the awards)- Ray is the new "it" girl of cooking (that's nominated in this category, otherwise I'd say the Italian hottie Giada DeLaurentis). Emeril's ship has sailed, and Martha's been away from the limelight for so long (doing time and looking for an apprentice), that we've forgotten who she is. However, Orman could pull off the upset. She won two years ago, and the Emmy voters love her stage presence.


and finally...the Main Course---
BEST DRAMA SERIES:

General Hospital (ABC)-- WILL WIN
Guiding Light (CBS)-- SHOULD WIN
The Young and the Restless (CBS)
Commentary: What if a show that led with the most nominations shot itself in the foot when it came to the big prize? Well, welcome to the Daytime Emmys, son. Y&R submitted the best hour of television with a lackluster episode, and as we learned in Math Class:

Y&R + Cassie's Death= Emmy Victory

However...Y&R + Cassie's Death + Lackluster 2nd Episode Does NOT = Emmy Victory

ATWT caught the same disease as Y&R. GL's tapes were great, but will they be enough to beat the most-honored show in this category? GH submitted two knockout tapes, and as I learned in Algebra:
General Hospital x Two Knockout Tapes= Emmy Victory

However, a GL win, will help boost the show's sagging morale, as the show in the past year had it's budget slashed, actor's cut loose, and sagging ratings not going up. If the show wins, there is a bright chance it could improve, and if it doesn't (Port Charles, anyone?), it could lead to a domino effect that I don't even want to think of (Another World anyone?).
To sum it up, GH will win it's second Emmy in a row on April 28, therefore probably putting the final nail in GL's coffin.

The I-70/71 Split

Two days ago, I attended an information session that the Ohio Department of Transportation had to address the I-70/71 Split...
The 70-71 Split

It was built over 40 years ago. As a local newscaster Anne Allred put it while covering this story for WSYX-TV in Columbus, "There are a lot of accidents." And truly there were. When it was built in 1963, it was designed for 125,000 cars a day. Now, there are 175,000, which is more than what it was designed to hold, causing for a lot of accidents on the downtown stretch that it covers. Most of the accidents from 2002 to 2004 on that stretch, according to a graph, occur in the eastbound to northbound lanes, followed by the southbound to westbound lanes. Of course, we're talking about the I-70/71 Split.

On February 15, 2006, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) met with local citizens affected by the split at the Columbus Health Department to discuss the alternatives of alleviating the congestion caused on the split. This was just the next step in a long process.

The study that was conducted by ODOT, began almost four years ago in May 2002. In February 2003, 6 concepts were chosen:
1. Upgrade SR 104 with I-71 (west) and US 33 (east)
2. Connect from I-70 (near Cooper Stadium) to SR 104 and I-71
3. Reroute I-71 to I-670 and SR 315
4. Add capacity and improve the 70/71 South Innerbelt
5. Thru-truck only land west of I-70/71/SR 315 to the east of the 70/71 split
6. Improve traffic/transit operation
a. Carpool
b. Alternate work schedules
c. Expansion of public transit
d. Vehicle restriction (thru trucks in 70/71 overlap)
e. Expansion of Intelligent Transit System (ITS)

In August of 2003, it was the fourth choice (adding capacity to the south innerbelt) that was chosen. In January of 2004, these seven alternatives were chosen:
a. One-Way Pair
b. Tunnel Below the Existing Lanes
c. Collection-Distribution Freeway System
d. Urbanize Freeway System
e. Arterial Boulevard
f. 2-Way Collection/Distribution Avenue Decked Over Freeway
g. 2-Way Collection/Distribution Avenue Using Local Street System

In August of 2004, the seven alternatives was trimmed down to three: One Way Pair, Urbanizing the Freeway, and the 2-Way C/D Avenue Using the Local Street System. At the February ODOT meeting, the three alternatives, would become two, and in August, the final alternative will be chosen.

At the meeting, there were maps of three areas, that would be impacted by the split, and used as alternative roads:
· Mound/Fulton (connect Mound Street from 5th to Grant; Fulton would go eastbound, and Mound west)
· Livingston/Fulton (Livingston traffic would go eastbound, and Fulton traffic would go westbound)
· Parsons/Lester (connect Lester Drive and Willow Alley from Spring Street to Main Street)

At the ODOT meeting, the Project Manager of the 70/71 Project, Tom Slack, talked about the recommendations that ODOT made, the information of the Grand Boulevard, the vision of the enhancement opportunities, and the next steps in the project. The projects don't come in cheap. The Mound/Fulton project would cost $ 660 Million, the Fulton/Livingston $675 Million, and the considered Grand Boulevard would be $ 850 Million. The new streets would be one-way within the existing footprint, 25-35 miles per hour, with wider sidewalks, bump cuts, and speed trees.

The meeting didn't come without some concern from the community. For example, the proposed Parsons/Lester alternative, would have the Parsons alternative road veer off from Parsons Avenue and Bryden Road, which is a residential street. A couple of residents were concerned that traffic would increase along Bryden, and preferred that the road split off at Parsons and Main Street, which is commercial. A German Village resident feared that the South Side community would be cut off by the new streets. Those were just a couple of the concerns. Property impacts to the following places were also mentioned at the meeting:
· Whittier Place
· Dodge Park
· The Africentric School
· Grant Hospital and their Fire & EMS concerns and access
· East side access to Jefferson Place and St. Paul A.M.E. Church
· Town/Franklin (Discovery District), Old Oaks, King-Lincoln, Olde Towne East
· Miranova, Waterford, and Americana

The impact of this project is huge. I-670 is designed to hold 52,000 vehicles on a daily basis. Paled in comparison to that, the two and a half mile stretch of 70/71 carries more than three times the congestion. According to Slack, during the meeting, he stated that ODOT's budget for the 70/71 project "is only $ 425 million, and that ODOT does not have the money for the alternatives." He also stated that "the crystal ball is real fuzzy right now", meaning that the direction of the project is not clear, and that "we should wait until we have the money and do it right."

Construction on the 70/71 project is slated to begin in 2010.


FACTS:
There are 17 exits in the 70/71 corridor alone.
The following myth was addressed at the meeting- ODOT can provide more funding, but the reality was, they can't, because
· ODOT's workforce was cut from 7800 to 5800
· After Hurricane Katrina, the federal bill was cut to 13 percent
· Construction costs are up by 8 percent
· Operating costs went up to a 2 percent growth
· ODOT raised the gas tax to 4th in the Nation

My Night Enjoying the Fiesta Bowl

I was one of a bunch of college football enthusiasts who didn't make the long trip to Tempe to watch only the fifth meeting between college football's two most storied football programs- Ohio State and Notre Dame, so I decided to go to the movie theatre...literally, and watch it on the big screen (no big lie) and enjoy the game with other Buckeye fans at the Arena Grand Theatre in Downtown Columbus.

It was the 3rd trip for the Buckeyes to Tempe (or as we now call it, "Columbus West") in the last four years, and the final Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, before it moves to Glendale and the new home of the Arizona Cardinals, next year for the National Championship (and another possible Buckeye return to the land of the sun).

All of the hype surrounding the game was put aside as the unusual worldwide romance between All-American Linebacker A.J. Hawk (of Ohio State) and the older sister of Notre Dame quarterback, Brady Quinn made headlines faster than all four of Ohio State's touchdowns in the game.

But could the Buckeyes make it four bowl wins in a row (meaning an eighth straight bowl of futility for the Irish), or would the "Ghosts of Clarett" (making headlines @ the most inopportune time again for the Buckeyes) take center stage in Tempe?

Both teams struck early, scoring on their first possessions. Notre Dame took it in on a run by Darius Walker, making it 7-0, two minutes in.

Then, on Ohio State's first possession, Ted Ginn got a late holiday present for QB Troy Smith- a 56-yard touchdown pass to tie it up at 7, 5 minutes in. "The war path was on", as I believe Brent Musberger said during the game.

It seemed like it was going to be a shootout, which is something that I like in teams that can move the ball down the field efficiently. Thanks to Charlie Weis, the offense improved (he brought over the exact same offensive scheme that the New England Patriots were used to, most recently), and the Irish scored a school record 427 points.

Back to the game...on the next Notre Dame drive, the Buckeyes put the Irish in check, and were forced to punt.

After the Buckeyes fumbled the ball away on the ensuing drive. The Irish were knocking on the OSU door at the Buckeye 15. The defense stopped them on the next three plays. Fourth down came along, and the Irish, who opted to go for it, had the door slammed in on them as OSU linebacker A.J. Hawk sacked Quinn.

After the OSU "tough-love" approach, on 3rd and 9, on the next OSU drive, Troy Smith threw an 18-yard pass to his former high school teammate, Ginn, and on the next play, Ginn ran an option run, and beep-beep, Ginn was making the races, "Excuse me" and goodbye, 68 yards later, it was 14-7, Ohio State. As the Fiesta Bowl's Grand Marshal, Jerry Rice said on the air, it was about to become "The Ted Ginn Show".

On the next Buckeye drive, Smith tried to connect to his favorite target once more, but disaster struck as the Buckeyes dropped the ball on the ground, and Notre Dame recovered yet another fumble.

As if the Irish weren't being tormented enough by the Scarlet & Gray, they tapped their own punt at the Ohio State 2-yard line. On 3rd down and forever, Troy Smith made a "get out of jail" run to the 15-yard line, where on the next play, he threw a bomb to another one of his favorite targets, Santonio Holmes, who outran the blue jerseys of Notre Dame and took it 85 yards to the house, where he was penalized for "celebrating too much" afterwards, and the rout was on, 21-7, Ohio State. The Bucks would get it once more before the first half concluded, and a 28-yard field goal attempt (which is usually makeable, by football standards) was blocked right before halftime.

The Scarlet and Gray Domination Ring in the Desert continued in the 3rd quarter, as Hawk once again sacked Quinn. However, the Buckeyes blocked yet another field goal attempt.

After the second blocked field goal attempt, Brady Quinn got the anemic by that time Notre Dame offense started up again, with several short, quick passes, all leading up to Walker's 2nd touchdown, from 10 yards. The Irish missed the extra point, making it 21-13, Notre Dame.

On the next Ohio State drive, Smith threw a pass to Ted Ginn, who escaped a tackle and almost disappeared like Houdini, but was forced out of bounds before he could go all the way...again. Later on that drive, OSU receiver Anthony Gonzalez fumbled the ball, which was picked up by Notre Dame's Tom Zbikowski, who ran it 89 yards the other way. The touchdown would be taken away, first by an illegal block by the Irish, and then by instant replay, as it was eventually determined that Gonzalez NEVER had clear possession of the football as he was juggling the ball before it hit the ground. The Buckeyes retained possession, and the third time was a charm for 6th year senior Josh Huston, who kicked a field goal to make it 24-13.

After the Buckeyes added another field goal, it seemed like the Notre Dame attempt for a comeback was going to fall flat, as Quinn got sacked by Mike Kudla for 15 yards. After that, the Irish regained speed as Notre Dame receiver Jeff Samardzija caught a pass to keep the drive alive. Later on the drive, the Irish put it all on the line of 4th Down (their first 4th Down conversion ended up in big negative gains), and Quinn threw a pass to Maurice Stovall to the Ohio State 8-yard line. A pass interference penalty put the Irish at the Ohio State 2, and on 3rd and Goal, a controversial one, it seemed like Darius Walker was short of the goal line. However, after an instant replay review, the ball barely crossed the plain of the goal line, and Walker's hat trick made it 27-20.

On the next Ohio State possession, it seemed like either the Bucks were trying to run it out, or trying to deliberately let Notre Dame come back into this game, but with less than two minutes to go in the game, Ohio State running back Antonio Pittman put an end to that with a 60-yard scamper with the fuel to add to the fire already burning and the dagger through the heart of Touchdown Jesus to make it 34-20, hence the final score. Ohio State had a Fiesta Bowl record of 617 yards of total offense and 27 first downs, as the OSU seniors, who almost three years to the day removed of winning a National Championship, ended their collegiate careers on the very same field, went out on a high note.

The Fake American Football League

Worked a legit job, did outdoor theatre, wrote a legit play and submitted it to an annual festival, and fraternized with local celebs & politicians

Nobody keeps them...20 minutes into the New Year, you'll be even lucky to keep your resolution. My own resolutions failed by the beginning of summer
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not this year...but the BC Blimp was born and hence gave birth to "Down By The Lake"- a one-act play written by yours truly
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not really

I never left town :o(

A car, a steady relationship

Way Too Much Information

WTMI- Way Too Much Information is about the reporters of a television station, and their misadventures and personal lives. Sitruc Nayrb is the lead general assignment reporter for WTMI, and he is probably the most responsible of the reporters, which includes Vietnam War Vet Alan and Divorcee Soccer Mom Nancy (they co-host the morning news), and rounding out the staff are the closeted gay News Editor Jeffrey and the abusive and seductive twentysomething station owner Harper.
